There
is a treasure trove of history hidden near
the center of modern Albuquerque. This "Original
Albuquerque" saw its beginning 70 years
before the American Revolution when King
Philip of Spain gave colonists permission
to settle an area of the Rio Grande Valley
known today as Old Town. This area, now
a historic zone, looks much like it did
centuries ago. Activities still center around
the picturesque plaza.

The
first building erected was the church, San Felipe
de Neri. Still standing on its original site, the
church remains the center of life in Old Town. Settlers
built their homes, shops and government offices
around the plaza. Take a walk
through history around Albuquerque Old Town Plaza,
the serene village that has been the focal point
of community life since 1706. Quiet hidden patios,
winding brick paths, gardens and balconies are waiting
to be discovered. Wrought iron and adobe benches
beckon you to rest in the shade and watch people
stroll by. Visit historic San Felipe de Neri Church
and relax in the Rose Garden. Shopping in Old Town
is truly a delightful experience. Unique items from
around the world, as well as those that are distinctly
Southwestern, can be found in more than 100 shops,
boutiques and galleries.
Stroll through saltwater habitats of the Gulf of
Mexico; salt marsh, eelgrass meadow, surf zone,
coral reef and deep ocean. At the Albuquerque Aquarium,
you'll see shore birds, pelicans, schooling fish,
lobsters, moray eels, jellyfish & a genuine Gulf
shrimp boat. The 185,000 gallon Deep Ocean tank
has an acrylic viewing window 38 feet wide, 9 feet
high and 8 inches thick, and features sharks and
thousands of reef fish. Many
centuries before Europeans explorers, the Pueblo
Indians developed a distinctive civilization.

Today,
the Pueblo people are settled in nineteen
communities, some of which have been
continuously inhabited since long
before the discovery of America. Still
retaining their ancient and largelly
secret ceremonial life, they neverthless
welcome visitors from all over the
world and offer a glimpse of the proud
heritage which they
