Anchorage sits at the head of 220 mile/354 kn-long
Cook Inlet. The Chugach Mountains frame the eastern
edge of Anchorage. Rising to more than 13,000 feet/3,900
meters, the mountain range stretches 250 miles/420
km in length and up to 60 miles/96 km in width.
The municipal boundaries stretch from Portage Glacier
to the head of Cook Inlet, encompassing 1,955 square
miles/5,064 square hectares, about the same size
as the state of Delaware. The northern lights, called
Aurora Borealis, is a show of green, blue, crimson
and magenta ribbons of light and are best seen from
September through April in the Anchorage area.
At the Eklutna Historical Park, just to the north
of downtown Anchorage, you'll find two Russian Orthodox
churches, see Native art and crafts and more than
80 spirit houses. There, small, colorfully painted
houses are placed over graves blending Native and
missionary cultures. This is the oldest continually-inhabited
Athabaskan site in the area.

At Thunderbird Falls, another attraction north
of downtown Anchorage, you can hike along
an easy one-mile trail to a picinc area along
Thunderbird Creek. The falls are hidden from
the picnic are in a canyon about 100 yards
further down the trail. Anchorage is covered
with greenbelts and surrounded by the Chugach
Mountain Range, home to the largest state
park in the nation with 495,000 acres. With
summer's extended daylight hours, visitors
can spend an hour or an entire day enjoying
many of the well maintained hiking and wilderness
trails that are nearby. For the traveler who
wants a little bit of everything, Anchorage
is the perfect place to go !
