In
addition to the large variety of well stocked luxury
shops, you will find Provencal materails, ceramics
and pottery, terra cotta figurines (santons), handicrafts,
and other specialities of the region. All throught
history the Rhônes river has contributed to the
economical and cultural wealth of the city. The
"rue des Teinturiers" (Dyers Street) is a cobblestoned
street running frpm the walls, following the Sorgue,
to the intersection of the "rue des Lices". In summer,
the street is appreciated for the coolness emenating
from the canal and the shade offered by the sycamore
trees, as well as for the many cafés and restaurants
to pass a pleasant moment before the start of a
theater piece during the festival. From morning
to late night, you can indulge in this exceptional
ambience, whether you are a theater-goer or simply
strolling. To immerge in the history of this picturesque
street, and at the same time, its residents, is
to immerge onesself in the history of Avignon itselfA
brief summary of Avignon's history and the delimitation
of its agglomeration is necessary to understand
what follows. Over the years, the city's perimeter
grew and successive defenses were modified, except
for periods of war or plague when the population
clustered around the city's original core, the Rocher
des Doms.

AVIGNON thus had several different ramparts.
The Rocher itself probably only served as
refuge and surveillance post. ROMAN WALLS
In the 1st century, the Romans constructed
a bulwark. Unfortunately, no document exists
today which verifies its exact delimitations.
Sylvain GAGNIERE, an authority on the subject,
formulated the hypothesis, supported by most
local historians, that marks the perimeter
as follows : - To the west : rue Petite Reille,
rue des Grottes, rue Racine, rue Bouquerie.
- To the south : rues Collège d'Annecy, Etudes
and Crucifix. - To the east: rues Four de
la Terre, Chapeau Rouge, Oriflamme and Sorguette.
- To the north : joining up to the oppidum
of the Rocher des Doms near the rue de la
Forêt and the Chapelle des Pénitents noirs.
