Magnificent
formal gardens grace much of the historic district,
adding to the beauty of the colonial, antebellum
and Victorian architecture.The Charleston Harbor,
formed by the Cooper and Ashley Rivers, is a favorite
spot for visitors to Charleston. The rock sea
wall along East Battery Street provides a walking
path for visitors to view historic Battery homes
lining the waterfront, White Point Gardens and
Fort Sumter in the distance. The Charleston area
offers a variety of nature-based activities to
visitors including eco-tours, turtle talks, bird
watching, crabbing clinics and more. South Carolina
has 22 percent of the marshes left on the East
Coast of North America. This is the most productive
ecosystem in the world. Capers Island, north of
the Isle of Palms, contains the longest stretch
of undeveloped shoreline on the East Coast. A
Charleston tradition, wrought iron gates and fences
can be seen throughout Charleston, especially
in well-manicured gardens. Master craftsman Philip
Simmons is responsible for some of Charleston's
most recognizable ironworks including those found
on Church Street, East Bay Street and in front
of the Charleston Visitors Center on Meeting Street.
Meeting and event professionals can choose from
a diverse selection of meeting and convention
facilities including the Charleston Area Convention
Center Complex. The complex opened in August 1999
and includes 200,000 square feet of space with
an 80,000 square foot exhibit hall, 25,000 square
foot ballroom and 20 meeting rooms for breakouts.

The
North Charleston Performing Arts Center
is adjacent to the convention center and
offers 2,300 seats and full production
capabilities. An architectural icon in
Charleston is the Single House, a one
room wide and two or more rooms deep residence.
Frequently a side porch is featured, referred
to as a 'piazza', giving welcome shade
and adding extra room for outdoor living.
All single houses have one formal opening
onto the street that serves as the property's
front door.
