An
industrial center along the Mississippi
River, Davenport is part of the metropolitan
area known as the Quad Cities (the other
cities are Bettendorf, Iowa; Moline, Illinois;
and Rock Island, Illinois). There's plenty
to explore in the Davenport area. We like
to start at the Davenport Museum of Art,
which includes an excellent collection
of paintings by Iowa native Grant Wood
(the artist who painted American Gothic).

If
there's time, see the Putnam Museum, which is
devoted to natural history (we especially liked
the miniature reproductions of ships in the River
Boat Gallery). We are a
bustling, vibrant community with a rich history
closely related to one of the world's mightiest
rivers, the picturesque Mississippi. Visitors
are always welcome in this friendly Midwest community
where the vigorous river runs east and west. Davenport
offers professional theatre, the Quad City Symphony,
historic riverboat cruises and riverboat gaming,
the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival, the Quad
City Air Show, the world famous Bix Beiderbecke
Memorial Jazz Festival and Bix 7 Race. River rats
wishing to ply the Mississippi on a paddle-wheeler
have several choices. Those that don't mind mixing
gambling with their cruise can take The President,
a restored boat that's been declared a National
Historic Landmark. Celebration River Cruises in
Moline, Illinois, offers nongambling trips on
the river, including dinner cruises (summer only).
Cultural programs and recreational activities
play an active role in the lives of Davenport
citizens. Cultural
programs and recreational activities play an active
role in the lives of Davenport citizens. The city
is home to the RiverCenter/Adler Theatre, Putnam
Museum of History and Natural Sciences, a 50 year
old children's theatre program, and one of the
largest art institutions in the state of Iowa,
the Davenport Museum of Art.
