The
capital of O'ahu, the most populated island
of the state of Hawaii, US, Honolulu is
a star city. There are the principal port,
the major airport, and business and financial
center, as well as the educational heart
of the State. The island of O'ahu is the
military command center of the Pacific.

Waikiki
is the visitor center. Landmarks: Nuuanu Pali, Diamond
Head, Pearl Harbor. The island of O'ahu, where Honolulu
is the capital, was called the 'gathering place'.
Voyaging canoes from all other islands would meet
on O'ahu's shores. Today O'ahu is again the 'gathering
place' that includes visitors from around the world.
The voyaging concept, therefore, is particularly
appropriate as a metaphor for travel in the Honolulu
International Airport, the major airport of entry
and departure for the Hawaiian Islands. It provides
a link between the travel of the early Hawaiians
and the visitor today. The busy airport, which occupies
2,216 acres of land and 2,210 acres of water is
located about three miles west of Downtown Honolulu,
and seven miles from Waikiki, and is served by close
to twenty airlines. Among O'ahu's attractions, the
Polynesian Cultural Center, located on Oahu's north
shore, brings together the history and cultures
of Hawaii, and the islands of Fiji, Tahiti and others
in some 42 acres of recreated villages.

There
the visitor can learn how the islanders build
their houses with no nails, expertly spear
fish, climb 50-foot trees for coconuts, pound
bark into cloth, carve fishhooks, weave mats
and cook with "hot rocks" in an underground
oven. Another high point of the visit are
the ancient war dances, the traditional wedding
ceremonies and the spectacular luau show with
a cast of over 100 Polynesian dancers.
