A
sliver of the Colorado River Valley where Nevada,
California and Arizona meet has been transformed
into a fast-growing tourist destination and gambling
resort in a few short decades. The city by the river
now attracts nearly 5 million visitors annually
who visit Laughlin to gamble, enjoy water sports
on the Colorado and attend many high-profile special
events hosted by the community. "Snowbirds," travelers
who migrate from cold weather hometowns in order
to winter in the sun belt, are a major component
of the Laughlin success story. Their influence is
reflected in the fact that Bullhead City and Laughlin
have 21 RV parks with 2,463 total sites. Nine mobile
home parks provide another 538 spaces. An estimated
10,000 to 15,000 snowbirds have staked out the area
as a winter home. Coursing more than a thousand
miles from the Rockies to the Sea of Cortez, the
mighty Colorado River provides irrigation, public
water and hydroelectric power to parts of California,
Nevada and Arizona. The river also offers a wide
spectrum of recreational activities. Enjoy water
skiing, jet skiing and fishing, as well as dinner
cruises and scenic tours aboard paddlewheel steamship
replicas and tour boats.
