Like
all the world's greatest capitals, Paris
lives at a fast pace, by day, by night
and especially at rush hours. It is divided
into 20 arrondissements that spiral out
like a snail shell from the first, centered
around the Louvre, of which certain quarters
like the Montmartre, Montparnasse, and
the Marais are real villages within the
city.

Paris
is the world capital of art and culture because
it has some of the most famous museums and monuments
in the world like the Eiffel Tower, the Notre-Dame
cathedral, and many more.With
its history and architectural patrimony, Paris
is living, moving, and evolving every day. One
of the world's capitals of culture, the 2003 season
of exhibits is off to a very good start. Through
September 29, 2003 the Musée du Louvre presented
"The Metamorphosis of the Louvre," exhibition
of a series of remarkable interior photos of the
museum and its collections. The photographs where
taken by architect, filmmaker and photographer
Jean-Christophe Ballot between 1992 and 1994 when
the palace was in full transformation and restoration
- Sully Wing/Musée du Louvre. Since December 22,
2001, access to the permanent collections of all
City of Paris museums are free of charge. The
museums are: Musée d'art moderne de la ville de
Paris, Carnavalet (Museum of the History of Paris),
Cognacq-Jay, Vie Romantique, Bourdelle, Zadkine,
Maison de Balzac, Mémorial Maréchal Leclerc, Musée
Jean Moulin. The
Petit Palais and the Musée Cernuschi will also
offer free admission to their permanent collections
after they reopen in 2004. In addition, the Maison
de Victor-Hugo will offer free admission from
January to March 3, 2002, and then again starting
August 15, 2002. For all these museums, admission
to temporary exhibitions will also be free for
children under 14.Paris, with its wealth of monuments,
tends to overshadow the richly forested and treasure
-dotted world around it.

The
traveler who gets out of the City of Light
into nearby countryside is usually drawn
to one or more of a trio of France's best-known
sights, remaining unaware of the region's
other remarkable attributes.The
fascination of the palaces of Versailles
and Fontainebleau along with Chartres' cathedral
make a grand gateway to the "Ile de
France" treasures. Ile de France is
a magic name in the annals of French culture.
This "island", framed within rivers, is
the heartland of France, tied to Gallic
history from Julius Caesar through Charlemagne,
Joan of Arc and more kings than most of
us can remember.
